Artists in the news

Did you see the harbor seals in The Boston Globe this weekend? They were showing off their artistic abilities during a Paint with the Seals program. We do this enriching behavior with the seals regularly, something fun that the seals can learn. But now visitors can be part of the creative process by choosing colors and being there while the masterpiece is created!

Learn more about our Paint With the Seals Program.

#155: Chuck is a Patriots superfan!

Are you ready for some football?! A friendly rivalry is brewing with the National Aquarium in Baltimore ahead of the upcoming New England Patriots - Baltimore Ravens playoff showdown. Chacoda got into the spirit with some raucous cheering for the New England Patriots during today's training session.

Here's the message from Baltimore that got our seals all fired up:

Grrr! Chacoda is confident the Pats will dominate.

#150: Thanksgiving with the seals

This year, Rochelle and I spent Thanksgiving at the aquarium. We had a lovely day and feasted with our 12 seals; yummm...

The menu: A juicy, succulent Herring with a side of calamari. And no Thanksgiving dinner would be complete without the smelts.

By the afternoon, bellies were full and naps were taken...

But not before Reggae made us a lovely holiday painting!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

#92: Painting Pinnipeds

Painting is one of my favorite things to do with the seals. Each painting is unique and we like to figure out what different paintings look like. Check out this example of one Chacoda did that resembles a man diving. This is a video of one of Lana's recent painting sessions. The paintbrush fits into a red holder that she bites on to. I ask her to "take" the brush holder and then "paint."

Here's the finished masterpiece:

What do you think it looks like?

#59: Oh My Gourd

We're getting into the spirit of the season at the harbor seal exhibit. Check out this picture of Lana adding her artistic touches to a pumpkin. You can also check out these shots of Lana painting on canvas, and this example of seal artwork!

#48: Move over Monet!

Here are some pictures taken the other day of Lana creating an original work of art. She has been trained to hold a square object that holds a paint brush and moves it back and forth on a canvas. Each seal has their own style. Lana tends to do big long brush strokes. Keep your eyes out for video of a painting session in the future!

#8: Man Diving

This picture, titled "Man Diving," was created by a 12-year old. Impressed? Now, what if we told you it was created by our 12 year-old male Atlantic harbor seal, Chacoda? Bet you are impressed now. Painting is a behavior that 5 of our 7 harbor seals know and each animal has developed their own unique style. Since seals are colorblind, the trainers will pick out the colors, but the animals create the masterpiece.
